Public events themed on the polar regions during ISAES 2011

The following public events have been organized to highlight polar science and the International Symposium of Antarctic Earth Sciences, being held in Edinburgh (11-16 July). The organisers are working with the local branch of the British Science Association and CORE (see below) to deliver these events to a wider general public. There’s something for everyone - so please enjoy!

Polar Open Days at Our Dynamic Earth:

Tue 12 - Thur 14 July (11.00 - 4.00pm)
‘Polar Open Days’ at Our Dynamic Earth, Holyrood Road, Edinburgh. Meet a polar scientist, see how they live and work - visit the tent, try the clothing or look at the fossils with hands on activities for all the family. Age 3+. Free to all Our Dynamic Earth ticket holders. Every day from 11.00am - 4.00pm.

British Antarctic Survey Events:

Sat 9 & Sun 10 July (various times)
Antarctic film screenings on the BBC Big Screen, Festival Square, Lothian Road, Edinburgh.
Includes: 'Polar Science for Planet Earth - the work of British Antarctic Survey (BAS)', 'The Vanishing Antarctic' produced by Rockhopper Films, 'A Place Like No Other' & 'Diving in Antarctica' - both by BAS.

Film screening of Frank Hurley’s ‘South’ at Edinburgh Filmhouse, Lothian Road, Edinburgh. Followed by a talk from visual artist Layla Curtis about her trip to Antarctica on the British Antarctic Survey’s Artists & Writers programme. Followed by Caf Scientifique (in the bar area), organized by the British Science Association (Edinburgh branch). Talk by BAS geologist Dr Alistair Crame - Antarctica - past, present and future @ 8.30pm

CORE
Based at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA), CORE (Creative Research into the Environment) brings together a network of creative practitioners - artists, architects, landscape architects and writers - with partners working in science and anthropology. The network aims to promote awareness of climate change and therefore cultural change, inspiring the public to examine their relationship with the environment, with art as a central means of communication. Environmental Dialogues is a series of creative interventions and conversations to coincide with ISAES. These interventions will increase public engagement with the importance of the Polar Regions in understanding our Earth and heighten awareness of more general environmental concerns.
