Using the New Oce Photocopier-Printers from Windows.

You need to install the printer drivers on Windows using the instructions available on the menu on the left Connecting Windows Printers. The printers for Drummond Street are geosp210, geosp211 and geosp212. For the Grant Institute we have geosp1, geosp2 and geosp3. For the Crew Building, geosp6 and geosp7.

Your chosen printer is now available in all the usual applications. You shouldn’t have to do the above ever again.

-----

In Word, Excel, Email, Web Browser or whatever, print in the normal way When the print dialog box pops up, make sure the correct network printer is selected. Something like:

\\geoshome3.geos.ed.ac.uk\geosp210

The clever stuff is under the ‘PROPERTIES’ button. You can:

  • Select paper tray (under Paper/Quality) - ‘Special Feeder’ = acetate sheets, which will have to be manually fed individually unless you put them in one of the other trays the right way round)
  • Print multiple pages on a single sheet (‘Layout’->Pages per Sheet )
  • Under ‘Job’ you can print double-sided, stapled sets etc.
  • Print A3 (either directly from an A3 document, or by enlarging an A4 document, under ‘Page’)
  • You can ask for multiple copies, but its more convenient to do this on the printer itself, because you can check the first copy is OK, then ask the printer to print more.

It's worth noting that you can also set any of these options from the control panel on the copier before your job is printed.

Once you have made your selections, choose PRINT and the document will be sent, but NOTHING WILL PRINT until you go to the printer-copier and complete the following procedure.

  • Type in your PIN. If you haven’t got your PIN you need to go here: http://www.geos.ed.ac.uk/it/FAQ/printing/show_pin.html
  • Hit the button labelled MAILBOX on the top-right of the display on the printer-copier. (There are various ways of retrieving your document, but this is prob. easiest.)
  • You should be presented with one or more documents listed next to your initials (if you see other peoples initials, you will have to move through the list using the arrow buttons - rhs of display - select your initials, and press SHOW DOCUMENTS.
  • Choose the document you wish to print. The other documents are those you printed last time but forgot to delete!
  • You can then use the buttons along the top of the display to change settings such as paper size, doubled-sided, stapled and etc. if you hadn’t selected these earlier.
  • You can select the number of copies as you would if you were copying, but its prob. wise just to print one first and see what it looks like
  • When you are happy press the BIG GREEN button to print (just like copying).
  • Once printed, if you don’t like the results or need more copies you can select the same document and reprint with the same or different settings as you wish. You SHOULD NOT have to reprint a job, just retrieve it from the printer-copier’s memory
  • Once finished please DELETE your job, unless you think you may want to come back an print another copy (useful for handouts where you didn’t do enough)
  • DON’T FORGET TO HIT THE CANCEL BUTTON SEVERAL TIMES TO DELETE YOUR PIN AND RESET THE PRINTER, otherwise other people will be able to print on your account.

I am told we can save a lot of money by sending as much printing as possible through these new printers, because they are on pre-paid contracts assuming 25,000 prints per month. They are also very fast, and hopefully ideal for doing sets of handouts.
