A professional approach requires:

• AWARENESS
  Be aware of:
  • nearest fire alarm
  • nearest fire-fighting equipment
  • nearest first-aider
  • nearest first-aid box
  • what your neighbour (in the office, laboratory, or in the field) is doing
• PLANNING
  Think ahead:
  • assess risks
  • take action to minimise risks
  • define contingency measures
• CALMNESS IN AN EMERGENCY
  Be familiar with emergency procedures. You are more likely to act calmly if you know what you are supposed to do.
• RESPONSIBILITY
  You are responsible for:
  • your own health and safety
  • the effect of your actions on the health and safety of your colleagues
  • taking action to report problems or potential problems
