Cameca SX100 electron microprobe

Introduction

The Tephrochronology Analytical Unit was created in April 1999 to provide a centre for the analysis of volcanic glass (tephra) by electron or ion microprobe. The Unit provides a service to the earth and environmental science community. It is funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and located in the Grant Institute of Earth Science at the University of Edinburgh.

Instrumentation

The Unit comprises a new five spectrometer Cameca SX100 electron microprobe for major and minor element analysis. A Cameca ims-4f and a Cameca ims 1270 ion microprobes are also available for trace element or isotopic measurements.
